After climbing his way back up and leaning on the guard rail Hal finally sees what’s become of his truck as it burns, a blazing effigy of his life’s work. Hal had a few months earlier invested in his brand-new tractor and now it sits destroyed by Russians, Terrorists, or space aliens, he’s not sure at this point.

As Hal is transfixed by his blazing truck, movement out of Hal’s peripheral vision catches his eye. Hal notices the large herd of moving cattle, obviously terrified by the explosion that just happened in the last few minutes running, or the more accurate term would be stampeding into the neighboring farmers field.

If Hal’s hearing was not temporarily muffled by the explosion, he would have also heard the panicked and terrified sounds as the herd collectively moved away from the highway through the farmers field.

Thankfully, Hal speculates, the cattle no longer pose a danger to those driving on the highway. 

Because of the nonstop rain storm Hal did not see that the farmers fields sat adjacent to a subdivision of newer homes where the impromptu army of cattle are headed.

Hal needs help and he begins walking away from his burning truck hoping to flag down someone going north hopefully stopping as they see the wreckage of his burning truck.
