Last time, Chad carefully approached his street and checked to see if the coast looked clear. He decided to try his luck at entering his house, packing a bag of essentials, and leaving before anyone showed up looking for him.

Chad slinked along through the shadows on the opposite side of the street from his house until he was directly across from his driveway.

He eyed the dark windows anxiously, imagining people waiting just inside to grab him as he entered.

He shook that from his mind and continued to look for any sign of the police. When he was confident that nobody was around, he silently counted to three and then bolted across the street toward his home.

He ran up the driveway, cut right, past the hedges, around the corner, along the side, around the next corner, under the deck, and to the back door.

He picked up the little ceramic lawn gnome and grabbed the key that he kept hidden underneath.

He fumbled with the key until he finally  managed to unlock the door and leap inside.

He didn’t want to turn any lights on, so as not to draw attention from outside, but he also wanted to move quickly, so he ran into or tripped over just about everything between the back door and his bedroom.

Once inside his room, he snatched up a backpack and began tossing things into it. He didn’t notice the sound of a vehicle turning onto his street just a short ways up the road…
