In last week’s episode we did some basic math to figure out how Chad was able to steal such a large sum of money despite only taking small amounts each day.

We deciphered that if Chad only took an average of $14 a day it adds up to about $70 per week. After 50 work weeks, that works out to be $3,500 stolen each year. So, after six years of steady theft, Chad managed to pilfer over $20,000 in cash directly out of the cash register without drawing attention to himself.

That’s not to say no one was suspicious, however…

Rob could tell something wasn’t right. Business was steady, but it wasn’t growing as much as his projections suggested it should.

He even suspected Chad at one point, going so far as to audit his own gas station, but he found no signs of theft. The numbers all added up every time.

Then one morning while Rob was doing some inventory at the gas station a customer walked in who Rob recognized.

“Hey, Christie!” he greeted her.

“Oh hi, Rob!” Christie responded.

“Listen, thanks for donating to the children’s hospital charity. I really appreciate it,” said Rob, sincerely.

Christie gave Rob a confused look.

“You’re very welcome, Rob, but… but how did you know I donated to that charity?” she asked him, perplexed.

“I know because you used one of our charity promotions to buy a 32oz black licorice slushy yesterday. I just got done counting up yesterday’s receipts and coupons,” Rob answered. He pointed at the wall where he hangs the donation cards.

Christie looks more confused than ever. After a moment, she said “Rob, I’ve been out of town for three weeks. Today is my first day back. I haven’t even been to your gas station in over a month.”
