Terry bought the million-dollar policy, sent proof to the broker, then promptly called the agent back and reduced his coverage to the state minimum liability level of $15,000 per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage. 

Terry plans on increasing his coverage later when he has more business, or when he gets busted by the truck broker – whichever comes first. 

On a rainy Fall afternoon Terry has a job downtown removing debris from an area damaged by recent flooding in late summer.  He picks up his load and is headed to the dump site. 

Timmy Hawkins, a newly licensed driver with a need for speed driving his father’s 1977 Chevy Corvette is weaving in and out of traffic as if he was a paid stunt driver on Mad Max. 

Without any warning Timmy cuts in front of Terry’s dump truck and then promptly slams on the breaks when another driver in front of Timmy suddenly stops to avoid running over a squirrel. 

Terry immediately slams on the breaks but it’s too late. Bad brakes on his dump truck in combination with 30 tons of weight causes him to flatten the corvette in front of him sending Timmy to the hospital with a spinal injury. 

Terry is cited despite the fact Timmy cut in front of him and a lawsuit of $1,000,000 is filed against Terry. 

Terry’s insurance company advises Terry it would be a good idea to hire an attorney. His coverage limits of $15,000 are insufficient and their duty to defend runs out when they offer the $15,000 policy limit to Timmy’s parents, which they are about to do. 

A court judgement of $987,000 is assessed against Terry. He files for bankruptcy protection and loses all of his assets he had carefully saved up over the years because he made a bad insurance decision.
